Description

She had never been particularly fond of guns, and she had certainly never wanted to shoot anyone, but Hawkeye had learned that the best way to keep her promise--the best way to protect Roy--was the simplest. Shoot anything that threatened. And maybe, depending on the day, aim at the colonel himself.

I like to imagine that Mustang is being ridiculous somewhere in front of her in this one...

I don't really have a lot to say about this one. It's not my favorite shot of the bunch, but I really felt that I should probably have a few solo shots of myself, since I have quite a few of the rest. Not to say there's anything wrong with this one, but you know how it is when it's a picture of you. ^_^ I did actually have a really hard time keeping a straight face in all of our shoots, but I'm working on that, and I think I got the srs bzns face here.

Construction note time! Don't bother reading if you don't care. ^_^

Those uniforms. I have this disgusting need to be super accurate, to make a costume look real rather than costumey (a habit pulled over from my Renfest days, I'm sure). In this case, it meant that the uniforms... they're real wool. 25 ounce felted, a type called Melton, exactly the type that was used in military uniforms all over the world in the early 1900s. It sheds dirts and smells, which makes upkeep a breeze, and it looks great... but 25 ounces is thick, and this is hot.

All the pattern bits are drafted from scratch. The butt-capes are big trapezoids with a seam down the center and a grey waistband/trim. I used jeans buttons, which hammer down onto a post rather than sew on, for the diamondy bit of the straps on the butt-cape, a technique I wish I'd used for the buttons on the waistband (those are normal buttons). The pants have a brass zipper and deep pockets, good for cons. They close with a big fat hook closure. Or, in my case, pins.

The jackets are beautiful. THe only issue I have with mine is that I messed up on my lining (the other two work), so I have to constantly pull it down, and that these are cut high-waisted. I'm making a pair of high-waisted dark wash jeans just so I can wear this jacket around. The cuffs, front flap, and collar are all two thicknesses of wool so they show a "right" side both folded and unfolded. The buttons on the flap and epaulettes are fully functioning. All grey trim is cut from a bottomweight cotton, folded into bias tape for the trim and just folded for the front detailing. The rank bars are yellow grosgrain ribbon sewed tediously into place, and the epaulettes are lined on the bottom with a polyester lining. The rank stars are fancy brass pins I found online. The shoulder cord is a medium (I think, I just picked one I liked) thickness cord braided together and sewed/glued under the epaulette. The narrow cord is folded over, whip bound with gold-yellow thread and attached to a jump ring that attaches to a cotton loop that's riveted onto the jacket. The free end of the narrow cord was then threaded through and glued to the lowest part of the braided cord.

Boots are military surplus steel-toed (I once broke a toe by stubbing it too hard, so these are nice for many reasons). The collar pins on Mustang (I maaaaay have forgotten mine... ^_^;; ) were carved from sculpey and molded in latex by a friend, and then I cast them in resin and painted them silver.

Long enough? ^_^
